Santiago, December 2023.- SMU, parent company of Unimarc and Super 10, had a productive end to the year with the opening of three new stores in the Metropolitan Region. These are two Unimarc located in Independencia and Estación Central, and a Super 10 located in Quilicura, which complement the offer of products at convenient prices for the residents of said communes. These establishments are also preceded by the recent openings of Unimarc and Alvi El Bosque - with the particularity of sharing the same location in the commune -, two other Unimarc in Estación Central and Quellón, and a Super 10 in Renca, all during the fourth quarter.
Likewise, during the first nine months of the year, the company had opened another six stores in the Unimarc and Alvi formats, thus making a total of 13 openings during the year in Chile. In this way, the supermarket company closes 2023 with a total of 390 stores throughout Chile: 292 Unimarc, 34 Alvi, seven Super 10 and 57 Mayorista 10.
The openings are part of an ambitious three-year growth plan carried out by SMU for the period 2023-2025. The goal is to open 58 new stores, 43 of them in Chile and another 15 in Peru. In this way the company would achieve a 14% expansion in the number of stores. “These new stores allow us to end 2023 with an important execution of the 2023-2025 three-year plan and with a record year in terms of large store openings. In fact, we were able to move forward more quickly than expected, even exceeding the 12 openings we had scheduled for Chile. In addition, we are also the company that opened the most stores in the country this year,” says Marcelo Gálvez, general manager of SMU.
The plan began its execution this year and the company expects to make an investment of US$300 million by 2025. In 2023, around US$100 million were invested, of which US$40 million were allocated for the openings. The strategy has as its main focus the Valparaíso and Metropolitan regions, where the opening of 25 new stores is projected.
“Despite economic uncertainty, we are committed to profitable and sustainable growth through the consolidation of our multiformat strategy. At SMU we have a long-term view and a commitment to Chilean families, opening stores and offering good products at the best prices,” says Gálvez.
