SMU participates in the Forum of Latin American and Caribbean Countries on Sustainable Development
In September 2015, the United Nations General Assembly approved the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, establishing a transformative vision towards economic, social, and environmental sustainability. The agenda sets forth 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) that serve as a planning tool for governments, civil society, and the private sector to create fair and inclusive societies. The Economic Commission for Latin America and the Caribbean (ECLAC) held the seventh meeting of the Sustainable Development Forum at its headquarters in Santiago. In this context, various parallel events were organized, and SMU, the parent company of Unimarc, Alvi, Mayorista 10, and Super 10, participated in the discussion organized by IST on the "Role of the Company and the Private Sector in the Implementation of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development," which was attended by the Secretary of the Commission, Luis Fidel Yañez. At this event, the Corporate Manager of People and Sustainability, Paula Coronel, presented SMU's experience in sustainable management and discussed the company's commitments and progress regarding the Sustainable Development Goals. She highlighted initiatives in Inclusion and Diversity, the Development of local suppliers through their 100% Nuestro program at Unimarc, food waste reduction, and finally, eco-labeling on own-brand products. The executive called on companies and organizations to "work on sustainability with a management approach, addressing what is relevant to each business, allowing management to be lived out cross-functionally, and finally, establishing commitments, objectives, and metrics to assess impact. "Following the presentations, Pilar Dañobeitía, chair of the board of SMU, was recognized for her contribution to SDG 5 Gender Equality. "SMU is committed to contributing to a more inclusive society and recognizes the importance of advancing equal opportunities in access to employment, training, and professional development, as well as working conditions. We are very proud to be the first supermarket chain to be certified in Standard 3262 Gender Equality and Work-Life Balance Management System and to obtain the Equality Seal, achievements also obtained by the Lo Aguirre Distribution Center of our Logistics Division," she emphasized. 2024 is already part of the second half for achieving the SDGs, and the monitoring report prepared by ECLAC speaks of a "complex global scenario marked by the continuation of the various crises that have been manifesting for several years." Paula Coronel emphasized the "importance of continuing to work with commitment and agility to advance in the fulfillment of the objectives and goals of the 2030 Agenda, which, as we have seen today, unfortunately, is facing delays."
